I watched the American version of Coupling this evening. It was pretty much a word for word remake. But if that is so, why do I remember laughing at the original and not once with the remake? One would think that if it is the same script at least one joke would work. It didn't. I give it 3 episodes before it dies.

It wasn't word-for-word exactly. They changed some of the wording when they didn't need to, cut out some lines that would have been funny, and added others that weren't so funny. I mostly noticed that they changed and cut out a lot of Sally's great lines. I laughed once or twice, but I found the laugh track jarring. I barely notice the laugh track in the British show.
I have a big problem with the casting of the American Jeff. The Britsh Jeff, Richard Coyle, *makes* the show. Although they kept Jeff's lines pretty much the same, the American guy didn't deliver them nearly as well. He was completely boring and unfunny.
I'm not happy with the American Susan either. I think the woman was a soap opera actress and it really shows. She doesn't come across as a real person the way the British Susan does. The American Steve, Jane, and Patrick were all acceptable. I can't comment on the American Sally yet as it seeed like she was barely in the first episode.

I felt so bad-- Germany is the wasteland for bad American TV. Once while I was in Germany I was flipping through the TV channels: David Hasselhof, Planet of the Apes, Porn, Alf, David Hasselhof, Planet of the Apes, Porn, Alf, etc... I said to Heiko-- "It's unreal, every channel is the same thing! David Hasselhof, Planet of the Apes, Porn, Alf."
Heiko replied, "Donna, this isn't America, I only have 4 channels!" :-)
In Germany they tried it with an word to word remake of "married... with children" and "Who's The Boss?". It didn't work! Why watching a copy if you can watch the original?
