If the lady doesn't answer and doesn't call back, it's a wasted effort. And any more than one message left on a machine/voicemail is too many. I think that "leaving a message" scene from Swingers (perhaps a male analogue to the movie you're quoting, although I haven't seen it) was an act of public service. When I was single, if I was interested in a woman then I'd call her the next day. Otherwise she'd get no call at all. I can't speak for all men but I think it's fair to say that any guy who waits three days because of some silly rule (promulgated by who, exactly?) can't really call himself a man.
